How to Spot a Fake Charger in Nigeria: 7 Quick Checks Before You Buy
Fake chargers are everywhere in Nigerian markets, and they look almost identical to the real thing. The difference shows up later: a phone that charges slowly, a battery that swells, or a charger that gets dangerously hot. Here are seven quick checks you can do before you pay.
1. The price is too good to be true
A genuine 65W GaN charger from a brand like Anker or Ugreen costs real money to make. If a seller is offering it for a fraction of the usual price, it is almost certainly a copy. Compare prices across a few trusted sellers before you buy.
2. Check the weight
Original chargers contain proper transformers, capacitors and heat management. Fakes cut corners, so they usually feel noticeably lighter. If you can, hold a known original next to the one you are buying.
3. Look closely at the printing
Original products have sharp, evenly printed text on the charger body and the box. Blurry letters, spelling mistakes, crooked logos or printing that rubs off with your thumb are red flags.
4. Find the model number and specifications
Every original charger lists a model number (for example, Anker model numbers usually start with the letter "A", such as A2667) and its exact input and output ratings. Search that model number on the brand's official website and confirm the product photos and specs match what is in your hand.
5. Check the packaging
Original packaging is sturdy, well sealed and usually includes a manual and warranty information. Thin boxes, missing manuals or products sold loose with no box are warning signs.
6. Test the charging speed
A fake "fast charger" often charges at normal speed or slower. If your phone supports fast charging, it should show a fast-charging indicator. A cheap USB power meter can also confirm whether the charger delivers the wattage it claims.
7. Buy from a seller who gives a real warranty
The simplest protection is to buy from a seller that guarantees originality and backs it with a written warranty. If a seller will not stand behind the product, ask yourself why.
Why it matters
A charger is the one accessory connected to both your expensive phone or laptop and the mains power. Saving a few thousand naira on a fake can cost you a new phone battery, or worse.
